The recent round of the Northampton and District Cycling Association time trial series, organised by the Towcester based A5 Rangers Cycling Club, had riders from Peterborough, Stamford and Leicester taking part as well as members of local clubs.
Sixty-two competitors raced the 19.4 miles of the out and back course from Grimscote to Culworth. Hot and sticky conditions over the undulating roads slowed times somewhat. Nevertheless, the winner, Banbury’s Jon Simpkins riding for the Drag 2 Zero team returned with a very creditable time of 43 minutes and 11 seconds. In second place was Jason Gurney of the Baines Racing team. A5 Rangers’ times were: Joseph Wood 51.03, Trevor Parrish 53.03 and Keith Gelder 1.01.25.
Two personal best times were set in the Club’s evening 10 mile event at Finmere. Junior rider Aaron Westgarth recorded a time of 24 minutes 44 seconds. Beating the 25mph average for the first time was Joseph Wood with a time of 23.54. The times for other club members are as follows: Dave Lazenby 22.05, Ian Ellis 24.08, Tim Carey 24.52, Gary Guntrip 25.55, Murray Kirton 26.26, Keith Gelder 28.20 and club chairman Sue Holliday with 31.56.
Over the weekend members were competing in events at Bedford and Uttoxeter. In the Icknield Road Club event, Ian Ellis and Ian Mead set personal bests at 25 miles with times of 58 minutes and 19 seconds and 1 hour and 27 seconds respectively. Also riding in the event was Murray Kirton who returned with a season’s best of 1.04.16. Dave Lazenby set yet another personal best while competing in the Belper Road Club 25. His time of 53.05 when added to his times at 50 and 100 miles look to have secured the club’s best all rounder trophy once again.
